DIY // No-Mess Oatmeal Scrub

Oats are not only delicious (I like to mix mine with a little milk and honey in the morning - yum!), they are also perfect for your skin. No matter what skin type you have, oats are gentle enough to be used as a scrub or a mask - I have a very oily T-zone and using an oat scrub in the morning keeps my skin fresh for hours! However, they do get quite messy and are hard to clean up, especially when they get washed down the drain. Here's a way you can get oil-free, clear skin without having to worry about clogged drains!

What you'll need:

  • An old pair of tights or pantyhose
  • 2 tablespoons of oats
  • small bowl
  • 2 rubber bands
  • scissors
  • A ruler
I'm using a pair of tights I used to wear in high school, back in the days when they had to be a horrible grey colour. Make sure the tights are clean; you don't want to be rubbing a well-used pair of tights all over your face, do you now?

Cut out a section of your tights about 10 cm (4 in) long.

Taking a rubber band, tie up one end of the cut out section.

Now take the oats in their bowl and pour them carefully into the open end of the cut out tights. You can use a spoon for this if your tights are particularly narrow.

Take the remaining rubber band and tie up the other end. Make sure the oats sit snugly in the centre, and are not falling about loosely.

And there you have it! A simple, no-mess solution to messy oat scrubs. Just wet it under the tap, give it a few squeezes and make small circles on your face to give yourself a gentle exfoliation. You can even use this in the shower or bathtub - simply add two more tablespoons of oats and add 10 cm to the length. The best part about this is that it is reusable (yay for being green!): simply empty the oats out into the garden, give the tights a wash, let it dry and refill.

Here are some other combinations to try:
  • Oats and coffee grounds: a great pick-me-up for sluggish mornings
  • Oats and green tea leaves: green tea acts as an astringent and reduces redness
  • Oats and milk: softens your skin
  • Oats and honey: honey is a natural antibacterial, and is great for acne

Love,
Quantum
